Geocache Description:

Thanks to HikerJamz for letting me adopt this one!!

The Val Decker Packing company was founded by Val Decker in Piqua, Ohio in 1903. A modest meat market established in 1872 grew to a 300,000+ sq.ft. complex by 1933 and was once one of the largest independents of the Mid-West.

At it's prime, the plant was equipped withe latest type of machinery and production facilities; the plant had a capacity for 3,500 hogs and 750 cattle per week.

The company distributed its products in a radius of 250 miles throughout Ohio and portions of Indiana, West Virginia, Kentucky and Michigan, mainly by refrigerated motor vehicles. A mighty fleet of huge yellow trucks blanketed the highways bearing the name of Piqua afar. As time went on the facility even made use of refrigerated rail-cars and shipped its product as-far-as: New Jersey, New York, Geogia, Florida, Virginia, Oregon, Massachusetts, Washington State, and California.

The company operated until 1981 as a local producer of hams, hot dogs, other meats, and lard under the tagline, "Piqua-lity". The large red steel cans which contained the lard is now a much sought after collector's item. The building which housed the meat packing plant was renovated in 1987 and is now the home to the Piqua Board of Education and sever small businesses.
