Geocache Description:

Join us in keeping Hawaii’s Magic Island sparkling! In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, we are doing our part to preserve beautiful Magic Island. This is a popular place that many locals use to swim, picnic, exercise, and talk story. However, how much do you really know about this "island?"

Did you know...
1) Magic Island is made of trash! - Built in 1964 on a shallow reef, it was originally a landfill project that added a 30 acre peninsula to the existing coast.

2) There was almost a Magic Island Hotel & Resort! - The area was originally designed to be the home for a new resort area that would expand to eventually include two more “islands.” However, after the initial creation of the peninsula, development stopped and the whole area became a public park.

3) Let’s meet at Aina Moana Park! - In 1972, the park’s name was officially changed to Aina Moana Park, which means “land from the sea.” But who ever calls it that anyway!

4) Now it’s President Barack Obama Park? - In December 2009, former Mayor Mufi Hannemann proposed the park’s name be changed in honor of President Obama and his ties to Hawaii. This idea was harshly opposed by locals (many of whom probably didn’t know fact #3!) However, under state law, parks, sites, or facilities may only be named after people who are deceased. Although Hannemann tried to change the law, the current status of this proposal is unknown.

5) It needs our help! - Due to its convenient location and beautiful beaches, Magic Island often attracts hundreds of families and locals each week. Unfortunately, picnic trash and litter often get left behind. We must help keep this park clean for future generations to enjoy!

Schedule:
4:30 - 4:45 = Meet at the coordinates, divide into smaller groups to cover more area, and go over safety precautions.

4:45 - 6:00 = Collect trash around the designated areas. Trash bags and gloves with be provided by plawler.

6:00 - 6:30 = Relax and join us for a potluck picnic!
