Skydog – Howard Duane Allman (1946-1971)
On 10/29/71 Duane Allman was heading west on Hillcrest Ave at this location on his Harley-Davidson. He took this route from The Big House on Vineville to his home in west Macon because with some speed he could catch some air where Iverness Ave crossed Hillcrest. At this intersection with Bartlett St., a lumber truck was turning onto Bartlett from Hillcrest. The truck stopped midway in the turn and Duane went around him on the left. The truck had a crane arm for loading lumber and the headache ball was hanging from it off the back of the truck. Duane hit the headache ball and skidded 90 feet into the opposite curb. His girlfriend, Dixie, and Barry Oakley’s sister, Candace, were following and witnessed the accident. Duane died 3 hrs later of internal injuries.
Rolling Stone magazine ranked Duane Allman as the 2nd greatest guitar player ever, behind only Jimi Hendrix.
