A simple cache with some history. Parking alongside the road. Placed in the big cedar tree, east of the driveway. Please replace it up in the branches to keep this winter friendly.
The old stone house near the cache location has interested me since I first saw it. Here is its history:
Thomas Averill was an Irish imigrant who settled on this farm, (lot 18 concession 3) Before homesteading in Innisfil, Thomas was a stone mason. The house was constructed about 1860 and is built entirely from materials gathered off the farm property. In addition to collecting the stones for the foundation and walls, (and they didn't use up all of the stones on this farm, there are plenty left), they also kilned their own lime in order to mix the mortar that cements the stones together. The steel sheeting on the roof was added mid 20th century, but it covers the wooden shingles used in the original construction.
The house has not been used as a residence since the late 1940's and has never had either plumbing or electrical wiring.
The cache is in the roadside allowance and not on private property, however, the property owner has given permission for its placement. There is no need to cross any fences.
