Geocache Description:

Where's the Beach? II

You are standing on a mostly man-made causeway connecting what used to be the island of Victoria Beach and the mainland.

Victoria Beach was previously known as L'Isle á la Biche, or Little Elk Island. The voyageurs would pass through this spot in their york boats as a shortcut to/from the Winnipeg River.

This causeway was built in the early 1900's so cottagers and other temporary residents could get to their exclusive summer properties.

The railway extension from Grand Beach / Grand Marais (connecting Victoria Beach all the way to Winnipeg) was then completed across this causeway in 1916. Eventually Highway #59 was built (then paved in 1957), providing automobile access to the peninsula.

The rail lines were removed in 1962, ending the train era at Victoria Beach.

Our previous version of this cache "Where's the Beach?" did not survive the unusual weather storm that impacted Lake Winnipeg in October 2010 (see weather bomb).

The cache is a small camo'd pill container hanging in a winter-friendly spot.
Please watch for muggles.
Approach from the east. You do NOT need to cross the water-filled ditch.
However, slight wading may still be required in the summer months.

Be stealthy during prime beach days, as this is a popular little beach and sun-worshipping spot. For maximum enjoyment, bring along your bathing suit!

This area is not in the restricted part of Victoria Beach so free access is available year-round.

Parking is available along the highway, but please observe the 300m stretch of no parking signs.

Bring your own pencil!

Attributes listing for paperless caching: Winter-friendly, stealth required in summer months, may require wading, free parking available nearby but observe the No Parking areas, dogs allowed, bicycles allowed, ticks!, poison plants, not wheelchair accessible, no ammenities, scenic view.

Congratulations to Search & Enjoy on being the FIRST to FIND of version 2 of this cache!
