Geocache Description:

The cache is a magnetic nanocache secreted in an open, fairly busy public place. It can be accessed by car but sometimes it may be unavailable if the car park is closed.

The cache is situated nextdoor to a derelict chemical works site which once, at it's peak, employed 2,500 people, excluding contractors. It also is the site of two anhydrite mines.
The company was called Marchon and was so successful that at one stage it was the largest single-site producer of sulphuric acid in Europe, the largest single-site producer of sodium tripolyphosphate in the world and even went on to have ten sister factories in South Africa, Australia(2), Singapore, Spain(2), Italy(2) and France(2).
The employees and residents of Whitehaven were devastated when it was announced in 2004 that the site was to shut. It eventually closed in 2005 and has since been partially cleared.
Around the perimeter of the site are the Coast-to-Coast walk as it approaches Sandwith and the footpath from Whitehaven to St Bees, managed by The National Trust, known as the Colourful Coast. They can easily be accessed from this car park by following the dogwalkers along the footpath and under the bridge.

The cache has been placed with the permission of the landowner.
