When visiting The Pig's Back cache (GC2QKRZ) we were fascinated
to note the bog road was a formally recognised road with an "R"
number (R13322). With the desolate views ahead and Muckish Mountain
to our left we returned to explore.......
FOR WALKERS
The "road" is, in fact, just over 2k long crossing between the
Glenveigh side and the Creelough side. (Waypoints below). It is a
gentle lowland walk of some 30 minutes with outstanding views of
the bogs and Muckish Mountain. Despite being relatively close to 2
roads you will be in a totally isolated environment with no sign of
habitation - a little like ancient times.
Despite being a relatively short walk it is a very open and
exposed area so please dress for the environment. You should be
booted for the last few metres to the cache as the area can be very
wet below the moss after rain.
FOR DRIVERS
It is an official road so it must be officially passable!! That
judgement we leave to you as you approach from either end. It will
need a very low speed and good clearance so we recommend not to
spoil a good walk. (Google Streetfinder sent their cameras down
this road from the Creeslough side - they turned back at the only
turning point on the road)
Parking is not available at GZ so you will need to stop on the
road - with the amount of traffic that would not be a problem -
meeting anything will be a problem!! You will need to boot up for
the last few metres.
THE CACHE
The cache is rated for walking - drivers can decide for
themselves!
The cache is near but not at the bridge which gave the cache
name. It is a regular camo cache with the usual goodies - please
BYOP and enjoy the views.
