Come out and help clean up one of the nicest state parks and
it's an island too.
When: April 30th at 9:00am to 4:00pm.
Where: Mackinac Island State Park/Grand Hotel.
This CITO event will encompass the whole state park that's on
Mackinac Island. Not all of the island is state park. Over 80% of
the island is.
Starting at 9:00am in the lobby of the Grand Hotel, there will
be a table setup with trash bags, brooms and marked up maps for you
to use for this CITO event. When you arrive please sign your name
on the piece of paper for which goal you are going to do. What I'm
planning to have is a large map of the island where you can write
your name on in the area you will be picking up trash in or which
stairs you will be sweeping. This way we should be able to cover
the island better.
We have two goals that we would like to work on. The first is a
trash pick up over the entire state park. Just walk on some of the
many trails and pickup any trash that you spot. Trash bags will be
handed out. You won't have to lug your filled trash bags around the
whole day. Several child waypoints will be posted where you can
bring the trash. If we can condense the trash bags by filling one
left at the trash collection waypoints that would help with not
wasting the bags.
The second goal is to sweep the wooden stairs that are found
around the island. The leaves that collect on the stairs cause them
to decay faster and also makes them slippery. In the past I have
used my foot to sweep the debris aside. This works fair at best.
Plans are in the works to have some small brooms with short handles
that can be used for this goal. If you have a small broom that
would be easy to carry and would like to be one of the sweepers,
please bring it. Child waypoints will be posted for the stairs
too.
Please note that all child waypoints are going to be marked
using Google Earth. I won't have the time to mark them with my GPS.
So they may not be as accurate as I would like to have them. But if
you are going to a set of stairs or a trash drop-off point, you
should be able to see them from the child waypoint.
