PT: O início da aldeia começa com aparecimento de pobres casebres de pescadores e agricultores. Em 1385, durante muito tempo a localidade formou com Alcochete uma só paróquia, que tinha a sua sede em Santa Maria de Sabonha actual freguesia de São Francisco, município de Alcochete. Na altura o Montijo era conhecida por Santa Maria de Sabonha e São Lourenço de Alhos Vedros (séc. XIV), mas cedo se desenvolveu, uma vez que no mesmo século, já era referenciada como um pequeno povoado dotado de igreja (possivelmente a Ermida de São Sebastião). Em 1514 passou a chamar-se Aldeia Galega do Ribatejo, durante os anos seguintes perdeu o nome de Ribatejo para ficar Aldeia Galega ou Aldegallega. Uma lenda da altura conta que, junto ao rio morava uma Alda, oriunda da Galiza, que tinha uma venda para servir as gentes que abordavam o porto, no sentido de se deslocarem para Lisboa ou Alentejo. No percurso das viagens, logo por certo, os viajantes afirmavam passar pela Alda, a “Galega”, que originaria o nome primitivo da povoação – Aldeia Galega. Contudo, em 1539 as localidades da Aldeia Galega e Alcochete separaram-se, ficando independentes. O seu nome actual só seria atribuído em 1930, passando a chamar-se Montijo. A vila cresceu para cidade em 1985, contado com 8 freguesias divididas em 2 áreas: a Zona Este, com as freguesias de Santo Isidro, Pegões e Canha, e a Zona Oeste, com as freguesias do Afonsoeiro, Atalaia, Alto Estanqueiro/Jardia, Montijo e Sarilhos Grandes.

In year 1385, this location and Alcochete were one large community, called Saint Maria de Sabonha, now is São Francisco, Alcochete. Montijo was known for Saint Maria de Sabonha and Lourenço de Alhos Vedros (XIV), the develop of the village began quickly, in the same century, the village had is first church (maybe Ermida de São Sebastião). In 1514, the local call the village, Aldeia Galega do Ribatejo, but during the following years lost the name do Ribatejo, to be Aldeia Galega ou Aldegallega. A histoy was told that, next to river liveed Alda of Galiza, that had sales to serve the people that approached the port, in the direction from Lisbon or Alentejo. In the journey, the travellers affirmed to pass for Alda a “Galega”, that originate the primitive name of the population. However, in 1539 the village of Aldeia Galega and Alcochete had been separated, becaming independent. Its current name would only be attributed in 1930, starting to call Montijo.
