The Cache is named after the informative book "In The Shadow of Moehau" by the Coville Historical Committee.
As the track to Mt Moehau is now closed I decided to place a cache in the Moehau Range where Mt Moehau could be viewed. This peak 880m is almost as high as Mt Moehau at 892m with some stunning views to the eastern and western side of the Coromandel Peninsula.
Start at Fantail Bay DOC Camp where the sign on the gate says "Fantail Bay Tramping Track".
This part is a farm road to the bush line. Once the fence line is reached there is a track through the manuka and over the fence. Follow the ORANGE TRIANGLES (Do not follow the orange ribbons, at this stage, or you may find you are on a different track) through the native bush to the top of the first peak and down to the saddle. The trail has been recently cleared off vegetation.
From the saddle ther are no ORANGE TRIANGLES but the odd piece of FADED ORANGE TAPE, on an old overgrown trail, up to the next peak. It is not sensible to attempt this cache if the cloud is low over the range as the markers from the saddle to the peak will be hard to find. Also very boggy on the tops after the rain.
I tried to get to Mt Moehau via this track but there is a 300m revene to traverse!
