Geocache Description:

Mulwala Canal Offtake

Welcome to my 52nd cache hide...
I have driven the road between Barooga and Mulwala many times and crossed the Mulwala Canal every time. So the location of this cache shows the starting point of the mighty Mulwala Canal. Here are a few quick facts about the Mulwala Canal:

- It is 120kms long
- It has a capacity of 8,100 megaliters per day
- It was constructed in 1936/37
- It has 2,800 kms of smaller channels leading from it
- It provides water to 2,100 farms over an area of 750,000 Hectares

Here is another interesting fact about the Mulwala Canal, Pacific Hydro operate The Drop Hydro hydroelectric power station on the canal, near Berrigan. The power station, which has a generating capacity of 2.5 MW of electricity, is Australia's first hydroelectric power station on an irrigation canal. Not bad hey.... Below is an image of "The Drop"

Below is and image at the start of the Canal, at the canal weir.

I found this website with some more information on the history of the Mulwala Canal. If you want an interesting read and have the time, take a look The History Of Irrigation In NSW

There is a heap more information at the site, including a map which shows the path of the Mulwala Canal. I have uploaded a few more images to the cache page, but the map pic does not show a lot of detail. I only had the iPhone on the day to take the pics.

The cache itslef is a 5ml Lip Balm container. It is a screw top PVC container and should be fairly indestructible and hopefully waterproof. This cache is about the location, more than the hide, so it is an easy one.

As always with caches near water, be careful. There is a fence around the area the cache is hidden in, but if you have kids, keep an eye on them with the main road nearby. Have Fun.
