Anderson Township was organized in 1793 and named after Colonel
Richard Clough Anderson (1750-1826), who fought at the Battle of
Yorktown and was the principal surveyor of lands appropriated by
Virginia as compensation to Virginia's Revolutionary War soldiers
in lieu of money in the new cash strapped nation.
Clough Creek and the road Clough Pike are also named in honor of
this man who never actually lived here. His job as the surveyor was
to sell it to others who did the pioneering.
Anderson was also a charter member of Society of the Cincinnati,
founded in 1783 to preserve the ideals and fellowship of the
Revolutionary War officers and to pressure the government to honor
pledges it had made to officers who fought for American
independence. It is from this society that Cincinnati gets its
name.
Col. Anderson was married to Elizabeth Clark, sister of William
Clark of Lewis and Clark Expedition fame. He died at his home in
Louisville, KY in 1826 and is buried in the Anderson Family
Cemetery there.
