In December 2007, the Kansas City Council approved $230 million of local tax increment financing The Trails project. The Trails project was to see the demolition of the defunct Bannister Mall and the building of a $1 billion dollar soccer complex.
The anchor and core of this complex would be a new 18,500 seat stadium for the Kansas City Major League Soccer team, the Kansas City Wizards (now Sporting Kansas City). The complex would include 12 additional soccer fields, over one-and-a-half million square feet of office space and over one million square feet of retail space.
Unfortunately, despite all the fanfare of the mayor and the city council, the project eventually fell apart and the Wizards chose a different home for their new stadium, in a different city, in a different county, in a different state, over an hour away, at Village West (The Legends) near the Kansas Speedway and CA Ballpark, the home of the Kansas City T-Bones.
So set your gaze on the grand soccer stadium complex that will never be. Never will be in Jackson County that is.
