Der Vulkankomplex Ischia bildet die rechteckige gleichnamige Insel mit einer Länge von 9 km und einer Breite von 6 km im Golf von Neapel. Die Eruption des Green Tuff Ignimbrit vor 56'000 Jahren führte zur Bildung einer Caldera. Der höchste Punkt der Insel ist der Monte Epomeo, welcher durch die Ablagerung dieser Ignimbrite gebildet wurde. Die vulkanischen Aktivitäten während des Holozäns bildeten mehrere Aschekegel, Lavadome und Lavaströme.Die letzte Eruption ereignete sich 1302, wobei ein Lavastrom entstand, der die Küste der Insel erreichte.Ischia ist vulkanischen Ursprungs. Die höchste Erhebung ist der Monte Epomeo mit 789 m.Der Monte Epomeo ist zwar wie die ganze Insel vulkanisch entstanden und geprägt, selbst aber kein Vulkan. Vor ca. 80.000 Jahren förderte ein Vulkan im Raum der heutigen Insel riesige Bimsstein- und Aschemengen (20 bis 40 Kubikkilometer; bei einem der stärksten Vulkanausbrüche in historischer Zeit, dem des Krakatau 1883, waren es nur 18 Kubikkilometer). Durch den so im Untergrund entstandenen Hohlraum sackte dessen Dach ein, und die Ablagerungen sanken unter den Meeresspiegel. Erneutes Eindringen von Lava in den Untergrund hob die darüber liegenden Schichten - es entstand die heutige Insel - und zerlegte sie dabei in Staffelbrüche.
Im Norden hob sich die Scholle stärker, so dass der Abfall vom Monte Epomeo dorthin steiler ist.
Entlang der Bruchlinien trat Lava aus (letzter Ausbruch im Jahr 1301), und noch heute dringt heißes Wasser (stellenweise fast 100°C) als natürliche Fumarolen (Marontistrand) oder in Bohrungen zu Tage.
Il complesso vulcanico di Ischia è l'isola stessa con una lunghezza di 9 km e una larghezza di 6 km, si trova nel Golfo di Napoli. L'eruzione del Tufo Verde Ignimbritiche prima di 56 mila anni fa, ha portato alla formazione di una caldera. Il punto più alto dell'isola raggiungibile con un autobus, è stato costituito dal deposito di Ignimbriti. L'attività vulcanica durante l'Olocene ha portato alla formazione di coni di cenere diversi, cupole e fiumi di lava. Lúltima eruzione si è verificato nel 1302, che ha creato un flusso di lava, che e´arrivato alle coste di Ischia. Circa 80.000 anni fa, il vulcano ha eruttato grandi quantità di pomice e cenere (da 20 a 40 chilometri cubi, con una delle eruzioni più potenti in tempi storici, quella del Krakatoa nel 1883 era solo di 18 chilometri cubi). La cavità così formata ha creato un tetto e le macerie sono scese sotto il livello del mare. La reintroduzione di lava è salita in superficie fino agli strati più elevati - cosi´ e´ nota l`isola oggi.
Nel nord, il terreno e´ più sollevato, in modo che la costa del lato nord e´ piu´ ripida.
Lungo le crepe e´ uscita la lava (ultima eruzione nel 1301), e esce ancora acqua calda (a volte quasi 100 ° C) come fumarole naturali (spiaggia dei Maronti) o in perforazione.
