Geocache Description:

Micro cache 4 cm x 0.75 cm containing log book please bring your own pen

We love this part of Norwich. The cache has taken its name from the fact that the cucking stool later called a ducking chair was sited near this point.
This is one of the oldest parts of Norwich with the area the other side of the river known as Norvic from which Norwich eventually took its name
There are records of a bridge on the site of Fye Bridge in 1153 but this site is thought to be the oldest known bridge crossing point on the River Wensum. In the early part of the 11th century, the nearby Magdalen Street was known as Fyebriggate which means “road leading to Fye Bridge. In The 12th century the bridge would have been a timber structure but, it was replaced early 15th century by a stone one. During the reign of Henry V, the bridge was destroyed by flooding
The current bridge was opened in 1933 and has two arches, each spanning 35 feet, with a width of 50 feet between parapets.
A plaque on the Bridge tells us that this was believed to have been the site of a medieval ducking stool used to punish “strumpets and common scolds”.
