Geocache Description:

The area of the cache has been devastated by the cutting down of forest trees to avoid them dropping into the sea and becoming a hazard to boats. The cache has been moved up the hill away from the viewpoint at the end of the track. It is no longer in the area where the trees have been cut down. Seal Spot is a traditional cache with a small lock-top box that can hold TBs, geocoins and small trinkets.

This cache on the edge of Culbin Forest at Findhorn Bay is at one of the most beautiful view points on the Moray Coast. There is a lovely beach here and miles of foreshore around the headland. Findhorn village and the yachts floating in the bay are in one direction whilst across the Moray Firth the mountains of Sutherland are visible on most days with Morven's triangular shape at over 70km distance being prominent. Seals can almost always be seen laying on sandbanks further out to sea and they swim past the point moving with the tide with their heads frequently above the water. The tide rushes in and out through the narrow channel at this point. They will watch you curiously if you are down at the waters edge. The cache is about an hour's walk (or you can easily cycle) from the Forestry Commission car park at Wellhill (NH998613)which is signposted Culbin Forest off the A96 to the West of Forres. A leaflet with a detailed plan of Culbin Forest including the forest tracks and points of interest overlaid with the OS Grid is usually available in a leaflet box at the car park. Instead of going directly to the cache, a popular route is to walk North to the coast at Buckie Lock and then head East along the beach and around the headland into Findhorn Bay to the cache. Return to the car park by the tracks along the southern edge of the forest: this route takes about 3 hours with stops. In the summer months, a water taxi, run by Findhorn Marina situated at the end of Findhorn village will take you across the Bay and land you on the beach close to the cache. There is a charge and you can arrange to be collected at a set time or by calling on your mobile. Recently, coastal erosion has cut back the land significantly in this area and it is no longer possible to clamber up directly from the waters edge close to the cache. If approaching along the beach or from the bay, it is necessary to leave the beach about 300 metres to the North West where it is possible to clamber up a small hill and then follow the edge into the bay which will bring you to the area of the cache. If approaching along the paths in the forest, be aware that the path comes to an end with a vertical drop onto the beach. Take care if children are running or cycling ahead. The erosion has meant that the cache has been moved back into the trees as its original position is about to be eroded away.
