Geocache Description:

A small 200ml Camo'd pill bottle is your quarry.

Okaiawa lies south-by-east from Mount Egmont, and the Inaha river runs not far from the township. This is the heart of dairy country.

The settlement is surrounded by excellent pastoral and farming country and the local pub is the nerve centre of the district.

Primarily, Okaiawa was well known for Joll's Skeet Road Creamery, Okaiawa. This creamery was established in 1894, and is situated three miles from Okaiawa. Power is derived from a breast wheel, and there was an auxiliary three horse-power Murray engine driven by a Murray boiler of eight home-power. There were three Alpha de Laval 440 gallon separators, a No. 5 Alpha de Laval pasteuriser, a skim milk weigher and a cream hoist. When it was built it was the most modern in the district.

The park is named after Dairy entrepreneur Thomas Joll, who is further commemorated with this marble bust at Okaiawa’s Joll domain. Joll established a chain of privately owned dairy factories around Okaiawa in the 1880s. After his death the company became the T. L. Joll Co-operative. Over the next half-century it expanded to become one of the major dairy companies in South Taranaki. In 1963 the company amalgamated with its main competitor, the Kaupokonui Dairy Co-operative, to form Kiwi Co-operative Dairies. In 1992 Kiwi Dairies merged with their north Taranaki equivalent, the Inglewood-based Moa-Nui Co-operative. This merger consolidated Taranaki’s dairy industry until the formation of the national dairy giant Fonterra in 2001. You could say this is the Heart of the Dairy industry in Taranaki.

The GZ is near to the HQ of the thriving Okaiawa Rugby Football Club, and the Tennis Club is nearby.
