The Mystery of the
Seven Test Tubes
Somebody has filled seven
test tubes with seven different solutions and labeled them with a
letter code. The actual identity of each solution is a mystery. You
are the chemical detective and it is your mission to correctly
identify each solution, matching the letter with
the number in the chart below in order to find the exact location
of the cache. Since there are over ten
million registered compounds, this would seem to be an impossible
task. In this case, however, you are in luck! All the other
compounds have an alibi for the time in question and we know for
certain what the seven solutions are. Here is the line-up:
A = NaI
B = H2O
C = Na2CO3
D = AgNO3 E =
HCl
F = Pb(NO3)2
G = NaCl
This
kind of process is called qualitative analysis. Procedures in
qualitative analysis often involve precipitation reactions. Good
luck! You´ll need it.
