Geocache Description:

This cache used to be the first of a series of 21 caches known as the South Herts Stroll. That series is now archived, but I decided to keep this one. Potters Bar is home to a number of "park and grab" cache and dashes, and because this one is right next to a layby it fits into the Potters Bar profile quite well. There is nothing special here - it's just there to help you boost your numbers.

If you walk a few yards north and head under the railway bridge, however, you will find yourself in Potters Bar Golf Course. It was on this course, at the 17th tee, that the body of Elizabeth Currell was discovered in April 1955. She had been bludgeoned to death with an iron tee marker, which had a solitary bloody palm print on it. It was during the following investigation that the police used, for the first time in the UK, palm print analysis to catch the killer. After taking samples of over 9,000 prints and comparing them to that of the murderer's, a match was eventually found. Michael Queripel, a 17-year-old clerk with Potters Bar Urban District Council, pleaded guilty to the crime. He was detained at His Majesty's pleasure.

That is not the only murder to have taken place at the club. In November 1947, railwayman Albert Welsh went missing after going for a walk. Six months later in May 1948 two schoolboys discovered his severed arm in the undergrowth near the 7th green. The police dragged the pond near by and found the rest of his dismembered body - in parts. The killer was never caught.
