Geocache Description:

Basilian Monastery of St. Nicholas - Krekhiv

In times of heavy rain, the cache may not be accessible unless one is willing to get wet. It is a very, very micro cache. Bring your own pen. If log is full, then a picture holding the micro will be accepted.

The monastery fortress had a humble beginning. In the 17th century two monastic priests, Yoil and Sylvester, from the Kyiv Pechersk Monastery stopped by the rock of Tymish in the vicinity of the Fiyna village, and decided to live their monastic lives there. They built their first small church by the rock.

Stanislav Zholkievski donated some land in 1612 nearby the village of Krekhiv to build a monastery. Soon the monastery became the spiritual center of the region. In the 1760s the monastery was formed into a walled fortress to protect the monks from the marauding Tatars. In 1936 the Stations of the Cross, a one-kilometer devotional walk to the top of the hill, were added and tens of thousands began to gather for the annual pilgrimage on the Feast of St. Nicholas.

In 1946, the region was taken by the Soviet Union and the Greek Catholic Church suffered great persecution. During this time the monastery was shut down and was left to ruin. Many of the monks were martyred and the rest were forced to live undercover. Towards the end of the Soviet Union, the Basilian order was reestablished and reconstruction began of the monastery in 1990.

The monastery is best known for its miracle working icons Mother of God and St. Nicholas. Today a large pilgrimage takes place in Krekhiv on the closest Sunday of the Feast of St. Nicholas (May 22). A second pilgrimage takes place of the Feast of the Transfiguration (August 19) that is the feast day of the church. A third major pilgrimage takes place in October of the Feast of the Patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The last Sunday of each month the Stations of the Cross are recited at 12:30.
