Geocache Description:

This is a two step multi-cache with lots of watchful eyes. In the end you will be looking for a magnetic key holder. After a long day of fun out caching stop by the breadbasket located not to far away to grab a bite to eat. Yummy Yummy

In 1873, when the railhead in Newton moved on to Dodge City, the economy of Newton may have withered away if it were not for Bernhard Warkentin. He came to America from Russia in 1873 to find good farmland, settling in the new town of Halstead. The farmstead in Halstead is still there. He founded the Halstead milling company in 1873. Bernhard kept the economy going with his help to introduce Turkey Red Hard Winter Wheat. This helped to make Kansas the breadbasket of the World. In 1886, Bernhard organized the Newton Milling and Elevator Company on Main street Newton. He moved his family to Newton in 1887. Bernhard was also instrumental in organizing the Blackwell Milling and Elevator Company in Blackwell, Oklahoma in 1900. However, his interests were not only in the milling business. He also helped organize the Halstead State Bank of Kansas, State Bank of Newton and Bethel Deaconess Hospital. In addition, he was active in the founding of Bethel College at Newton. This is now one of the largest and best-equipped colleges of the Mennonite Church. He was a devoted Husband and Father, and a lifelong, devout member of the Mennonite Church. Unfortunately, he died in an accidental shooting on a train April 1st, 1908. His son, Carl B. Warkentin took up the responsibilities of the business. Their home still stands today as the Warkentin Museum on 1st Street in Newton with many of their original things still inside.

This is a two part-multi cache. The above coordinates will take you to Bernhard’s Newton Mill. There is a sign with the name of what the business is now called. The final coordinates are not very far away. Location is full of watchful eyes. Stealth will be necessary. Have a seat on a bench while you wait. As you are waiting look across the street to the South/East. There is a mural on a building. At the heart of the painting is a smaller version of the Mennonite statue that is at athletic park. The actual statue is in honor of the Mennonites in the 1870’s and the Turkey Red Hard Winter Wheat that Bernhard encouraged them to bring from Russia.

For the Final coordinates answer this question:

How many people are there in the mural? Not including the 3 smaller people in the painting. You can see the answer from this side of the street.

4 people = 38 02.638 W097 20.625
5 people = 38 02.714 W097 20.649
6 people = 38 02.753 W097 20.721
