WWW.GEOCACHING.COM defines a Letterbox Hybrid geocache as :
A cache type paying homage to an older form of scavenger hunt. Letterbox hybrids must contain a signature stamp that stays with the box. A letterbox hybrid may have a mystery or puzzle element, but cannot be designed to be found by only using clues. To seek a letterbox hybrid, you will not need your own personal stamp and letterboxing logbook.
Historically, The very first local Eisteddfod took place in Birkenhead in 1864. It was then followed by an unofficial National Eisteddfod event in 1879. Finally, almost 40 years later, Penbedw (The Welsh name for Birkenhead) hosted Wales’ National Eisteddfod in 1917. The poet Ellis Humphrey Evans, was awarded the chair but he was unable to collect the award as he had been killed the previous month on the battlefield in Belgium. The bardic chair was therefore draped in black.
There is a memorial to this Eisteddfod at the above co-ordinates. The inscription reads :
“GoreuArf, Arf Dysc”
“Ar Y llecyn lwn y cynhaliwyd Gorsedd beirdd ynys prydain ynglynag Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Birkenhead 1917”
“This Stone – the gift of councillor David Evans commemorates the proclamation, on this site, of the National Eisteddfor of the year 1917”

For Letterboxers :
Standing in front of the memorial (location as in picture above, but looking other way), you can see three benches. Walk to the LEFT hand end of the LEFT bench counting your paces. Use the benches like the sight of a gun. Walk the same number of paces from the end of the third bench to the cache.
For Geocachers :
The cache is at N 53 23.4NN W 003 02.6WW
Where NN = Number of round vertical bars in the railing around the memorial + 2
and WW = Number of decorative rail tops under arches * 2
In the Summer 2013 it looks like a vehicle has crashed into the railings. All 4 sides were identical so counting can be done on one side, and the result multiplied by 4 (corner posts are not included in the calculations). The image on the cache page is of one side, so that can also be used for the calculations (larger version available if you click on the image)
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE INK STAMP AND INK PAD ARE NOT TRADE ITEMS
ENSURE THEY ARE SEALED IN THEIR RESPECTIVE BAGS AND REMAIN IN THE CACHE
Please note, that although the park is open to pedestrians at all times, the large vehicular gates are locked at dusk. If you are attempting the cache in the evening it is advisable to leave your car outside the park so it does not get locked inside.
Thanks to the Birkenhead Park Rangers for all their assistance in placing this cache.
