Bear Camp
General Braddock's 6th camp on the march to Fort
Duquesne Saturday and Sunday June 20th and 21st, 1755.
Washington was forced to remain behind with a
guard on account of "violent fevers" until cured by "Dr. James's
Powders (one of the most excellent medicines in the world)," he
wrote his brother Augustine.
Water was a problem and the army suffered from
endemic fevers. Washington was struck down and left at Bear Camp,
catching the army up in time for the battle
Bear Camp was just east of Winding Ridge,
elevation 2610 feet. From the Marker you can see the steepness of
the ridge. Many of the ridges of the Allegheny Plateau were as
steep and Braddock's army faced them as they struggled to move
their heavy supplies westward.
