Geocache Description:

The cache was originally placed by JuneNY.
This burial ground is located on Route 23 between West Laurens and Morris (closer to Morris). It is across the road from a large, newer cemetery. I thought this area was the old part of the larger cemetery, but it appears to be totally separate.

This geocache is not hidden in the cemetery, in fact you don't even have to go inside the stone wall to find it.

There is a somewhat famous person buried here:
US Senator Samuel Smith Bowne.
Samuel Smith Bowne (April 11, 1800 – July 9,
1865) was a U.S. Representative from New York.

Born in New Rochelle, New York, Bowne moved
to Otsego County with his parents, who
settled near Morris, New York. He attended
the common schools. He engaged in
agricultural pursuits. He moved to Laurens,
Otsego County, in 1825. He studied law. He
was admitted to the bar in 1832 and commenced
practice in Laurens. He moved to Cooperstown,
New York. He served as member of the State
assembly in 1834. Bowne was elected as a
Democrat to the
Twenty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1841 –
March 3, 1843). He was not a candidate for
renomination in 1842. He moved to Rochester,
New York, in 1846 and continued the practice
of his profession. He served as judge of
Otsego County 1851–1855. He resumed the
practice of law. He died on his farm near
Morris, New York, July 9, 1865.

Please treat this area with the respect it deserves and please do not look for this geocache after dark.

To avoid parking in neighbor's driveway I recommend parking across the road at the entrance to the other cemetery and walking to the cache from there.

Some precautions to be aware of when doing this cache:
Beware of things that slither and bite. Do not put hands in a hole without checking to be sure there is nothing in there that could bite.
Watch out for pointy branches that could poke your eyes.
Beware of trees with BIG thorns on branches.
Beware of dead or leaning trees and big branches that could fall on you.

8/18/14 The area of the cache is accessible, but some trees have fallen over making it harder to get to. Be careful of dead overhanging branches that could be dangerous. Avoid them by approaching from a safe direction. By looking for this cache you do so at your own risk and assume all responsibility.

Be sure to close cache container tightly so moisture doesn't get inside.

CONGRATULATIONS to Art Fully Bare on being first to find!
