Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a series of caches highlighting bridges that span the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. Please bring you own pen or pencil. Beware of mugglers.

The bridge crossing the Susquehanna River in Mahaffey is named the PFC Melvin L Brown Memorial Bridge. PFC Brown received the Medal of Honor posthumously for his service in the Korean War. The medal was presented to his parents by President Harry Truman.

Mahaffey is a borough located on the river and the mouth of Chess Creek (a good stocked trout stream). The town is named after Robert Mahaffey who located on this sited in 1841. Mr. Mahaffey had called the town "Franklin". Mahaffey was incorporated as a borough in 1889 and consisted of .4 square miles of land. In 1911 the main industries were a large tannery and a grist-mill (tanneries were common in Pennsylvania due to the great supply of pine bark used in the tanning process). It was also the junction of two rail lines that serviced the coal industry in the area which is still an active industry to this day. It is also the home of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Camp and Retreat, located just north along the river.
