Where is Alsómocsolád?
Alsómocsolád with a population of 343 is a small village in the Northern corner of Baranya county, in the Baranya Hegyhát region, on the border of Tolna county. It is about 55-60 km from three county seats: Pécs, Szekszárd and Kaposvár. The nearest larger settlement is Dombóvár, 18 km from here. The village was built partly on a gently sloping hillside, partly in a valley. It is bordered by woods from the east and fish ponds from the west.
How to Get There?
By car you can approach Alsómocsolád from the direction of Mágocs.
A 3,5 km dirt road leads from Bikal passing the four fish ponds. This could be a shortcut, but don’t tempt it by car, only by bike or on foot. Another dirt road leads from Ág, but that is again not recommended for regular cars.
Unfortunately, getting here by public transportation is very time consuming, you’d better off coming by bike.
Parking
The best is to leave your car in the middle of the village, near the church. From here you will need to walk 1000 m to the cache. You may save 350 m, and miss some nice sights, if you try to stop on the steep and narrow Petőfi street that leads toward the forest park.
The Forest Park
The forest park is on the south, south-east side of the village. On Petőfi street, near two wooden statues and a carved bench, a sign indicates where one needs to turn right: "Parkerdő és Erdei tornapálya". Walk up on the trail on the edge of the field! Occasionally turn back and look around, you will be rewarded by a nice view of the village and the lakes. After passing the Calvary, a wine cellar, and two old wine cellars dug in the loess wall, turn down to your right and you will see the forest park's carved wooden gate and information board.
When establishing the forest park it was an important goal to keep the great variety of trees. Besides acacia, Turkey oak, field elm, the forest contained horn-beam, walnut, small-leaved lime, English oak, mulberry, and ash. Efforts were made to save the old trees, but new ones were planted as well. Italian oak, downy oak, chestnut, sycamore maple, Norway maple, wild cherry, wild pear, basswood, silver-leaf poplar, black poplar, and sorb feel home here.
Learning the species is aided by information sings, like in a botanical garden. Larger boards present mushrooms, wild flowers, reptiles, birds, mammals and teach about the forests in our lives. Besides the flora and the fauna, the inorganic environment, the soil erosion, caused by water in the loess soil is worth our attention. But, this place is not all about learning! There is a ten stage fitness trail and a playground, complete with a picnic area and a a rain shelter. You can quench your thirst at the spring. After you did all the exercises, read all the information signs you deserve to get to the cache.
