Geocache Description:

The cache is now a bison tube and will require some extraction. It is tucked away where we would like it to be replaced, please. It has been placed here in this amazing spot with kind permission of Copeland Council.

It is nearby to the two pit shafts of Duke Pit, one of which is now covered by The Beacon Museum. The remains you see are those of the ‘medieval’ style fan house, built in 1836, that housed a 36 ft. diameter Guibel fan (A ventilating fan house with an expanding chimney. ) from 1870 - this is claimed to be one of the few surviving examples of this type of fan house. The shaft was sunk in 1749 as a ventilation shaft, it was later used by Wellington Pit when Duke Pit closed in 1844.
