Geocache Description:

Small pill bottle in FULL CAMO just hanging around. Legal access from parking coordinates.

A few months ago I read an interesting biography about a man I only knew of by a few place names. Wendell T. Robie (Not Robbie!) is most known for founding the now famous Western States "100 Miles -- One Day" (Tevis Cup) Trail Ride from Tahoe City to Auburn in 1955. This annual event has heightened public recognition of the need for trails and has brought enormous support for trail protection.

What is not as well known is that he was also a champion for Sierra skiing. He coordinated the building of a ski jump in Berkley (moving tons of real Sierra snow) to promote the area for Nordic use, and also added early support to bringing the 1960 Olympics to Squaw Valley.

No, he wasn't perfect (he liked to drive fast, almost killing himself in a through-the-windshield old highway 40 wreck) but Robie loved the trails of the Sierra Nevada and foothills. Sharing their beauty and challenge of nature with others was one of the true joys of his life. Besides, I hear the line of perfect people is pretty short!

Recently the City Council announced the first 10 names to be honored in the new central square on stone tablets (graniteman's co. got the bid!), and I was surprised that his name wasn't among them. His family's lumber co. produced many homes all over the foothills over the years as well, so I thought a cache in his honor was due.

Congrats to oldwood for FTF!
