Description: Fourth cache in a series of Georgia Authors, about whom I teach. The cache itself is a dry cell phone storage container. Easy park and grab. Cache has been moved slightly. It is on the south side of the tracks.
Olive Ann Burns (July 17, 1924 – July 4, 1990) was a Georgia author best known for her novel Cold Sassy Tree, published in 1984. She was born in Banks County and grew up in Commerce, GA.
"It has been said that growing up in the South and becoming a writer is like spending your life riding in a wagon, seated in a chair that is always facing backwards," author Olive Ann Burns once commented. "I don't face life looking backwards, but I have written about past times and past people." Using the vivid recollections of her own family, Burns created the critically acclaimed bestseller Cold Sassy Tree and an unfinished sequel, Leaving Cold Sassy, which were both set in rural Georgia of the early twentieth century.
Concord, GA became the setting for the movie “Cold Sassy Tree.” At this cache, you will be nearby the two most important landmarks shown in the movie: Grandpa Blakeslee’s store (the old R.L. Strickland building) and Will Tweedy’s house (on Highway 18).
Burns described the store as “a big brick store with mahogany counters, beveled glass mirrors, and big colored signs for Coca Cola, Mother’s Friend ( “Take to make Childbirth Easier”), Fletcher’s Castoria, Old Dutch Cleanser, McKesson and Robbins Liniment, and all like that…Grandpa had him a big sign out front over the entrance to the store. In fancy red letters outlined in gold it said: GENERAL MERCHANDISE, Mr. E. Rucker Blakeslee, Proprietor.”
