This nature trail is a little known trail to many that provides for
an excellent walk with some wonderful views. The area is known to
many names such as Hog's Hill, Cheeseman's Inlet, Hoop Pole Creek
and Hoop Hole Creek. This area is where Union soldiers landed from
Morehead City during the Civil War an began their two week battle
to take over the Confederate held Fort Macon which protected the
inlet. Union soldiers hand to haul their artillary through the
brush, across the dunes and down the beaches. The name Hoop Pole
comes from the use of saplings that were prevalent in the area
years ago. The bark from these saplings was stripped to make the
hoops that held the ends of wooden barrels together, before steel
and iron were used. Hence the term "Hoop Pole". At the beginning of
the trail on the boardwalk, there are boxes that normally hold
brochures and trail maps but most of the time are empty. You can
download a copy of the brochure and map at
http://www.nccoast.org/restoration-education/nature-trails.asp.
Enjoy the scenery and watch out for the poison ivey. If you stay in
the center of the trails, you will be OK. This area is part of the
NC Coastal Federation Clean Water Reserve and is home to many
species of wildlife and plant life so please practice "Cache In,
Trash Out" to help protect our preserves.
