Geocache Description:

A small camouflaged cache in Vimiera Reserve.

This cache was placed to mark Anzac Day 2011. It is a 3 minute walk along the Convict Trail, which follows part of the old Great North Road.

Vimiera Reserve is named after the HMS Vimiera, a 16 gun brig sloop that saw service in the Royal Navy before being used to transport 280 convicts to Australia in 1865. A second HMS Vimiera was commissioned in 1917; it was an Admiralty V-class destroyer that was eventually sunk by a mine in 1942.

"Vimiera" is an alternative spelling of "Vimeiro" in Portugal, site of the Battle of Vimeiro. In the Battle of Vimeiro (August 21, 1808) the British under General Arthur Wellesley defeated the French under Major-General Jean-Andoche Junot.

The village of Vimeiro is near Lisbon. It has an area of approximately 7 sq km and a population of 1,443 as of 2001.
