Diefenbaker Homestead Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

onecrazycanadian: Hi,

I'm archiving this listing since it's been at least 2 weeks since I last contacted you and there has been no response. If you correct the problem I indicated at some time in the near future I will take another look at it and may consider unarchiving the cache.

Thanks

Geocache Description:

The Diefenbaker family moved to the R.M. of Great Bend in 1906 from Ontario to this homestead. Both William, John's father, and his Uncle Edward were teachers and farmers in the area. John and his brother Elmer attended Halcyonia and Hoffnungsfeld schools with John eventually teaching, although not for long, at Wheatheart School. John also worked as a farm hand in the area however the Diefenbakers decided to move to Saskatoon in 1910 to allow their sons to continue with their education.

The Diefenbakers kept the title to the homestead but the original shack, then abandoned was used by many new homesteaders on their way to their new home sections or the newly married starting out. It was eventually moved to Regina, restored and furnished. John donated the homestead section to the University of Saskatchewan who erected a fieldstone cairn and commemorative plaque.

The Borden Museum built a scale replica of the homestead shack which was furnished by donations of furniture etc. from those in the community. The original restored homestead shack was moved from Regina to the Sukanen Ship and Pioneer Village Museum, south of Moose Jaw in 2004.

Please replace the cache as you found it, well hidden for the next cacher. BYOP.
