Geocache Description:


Walwa is on the Victorian side of the Murray Rriver. A short drive takes you to Upper Murray Resort and then across the Murray to Jingellic. The area around Walwa offers a multitude of activities ranging from canoeing, white-water rafting, bush-walking, horse-riding, cycling, fishing and 4 wheel driving. Situated in the foothills it is famous as the birth place of the Murray Grey. ‘A Meeting Of Waters’ ‘Walwa’ is an aboriginal word meaning ‘a meeting of waters’. Proximity to the Murray River makes Walwa and Jingellic popular among those who enjoying a variety of water sports including canoeing, swimming and fishing. European settlers have appreciated the area’s beauty since they first began to arrive in 1837. The Walwa township was surveyed by 1870. With a store, hotel and craft shops, bush nursing centre and primary school, Walwa is a small but active community. It is also home to community radio station 3RUM. Drop a line in the Murray and you may even catch a big cod! A Post Office first opened on 1 March 1861 and closed in 1865. A Post Office again opened on 1 December 1885, although known as Walwa Creek from 1886 until 1905. Pine Mountain a few kilometres out of Walwa, located in the Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park is the largest monolith in the southern hemisphere at 1.5 times the size of Uluru (Ayres Rock). The cache is a small container with room for small stumps.
