Geocache Description:

Découverte de Laneuville au bois et de son sentier didactique.(+/- 3,7 Km)
Discovery of Laneuville-au-Bois and its didactic path. (+/- 3,7 Km)

L'origine du village est intimement liée à sa position, au coeur de la vaste forêt de Freyr,
puisqu'il semble qu'une clairière y ait été investie comme lieu de travail, à la fois pour les sabotiers et pour les charbonniers.
Une aire de faulde est encore visible à la sortie du village vers Tenneville,le long d'un sentier didactique :
cette grande trace circulaire marque l'emplacement d'un monticule de bois, lentement consumé pour en extraire le charbon de bois.
Par ailleurs, au musée en plein air du Fourneau St Michel, un atelier de sabotier issu du village est encore visible.
Le village de Laneuville-au-Bois est typiquement ardennais.
Les bâtiments en pierre locale et les toits à croupettes sont encore majoritaires.
Autour de l'église, on peut admirer les plus belles demeures, ancienne école ou exploitations agricoles,
certaines ont même conservé l'atelier annexe du sabotier.
A la sortie du village, vers l'est, une petite potale du XVIIIe siècle est un témoin ancien de la piété populaire.
Enfin, dans cette même rue, trois maisons à l'architecture contemporaine toute particulière ont reçu chacune un prix lors de concours.
Point de départ idéal de nombreuses promenades, le village est au coeur d'un écrin de verdure
de plusieurs milliers d'hectares de forêts mixtes et vallonnées.
Ce patrimoine naturel est le joyau de la Couronne de Belgique, mais son accès est tout à fait libre
à condition de respecter l'environnement.

The origin of the village is closely related to its position, in the middle of the vast forest of Freyr,
as it seems that a clearing was invested there as work place, at the same time for the clog-makers and the charcoal-makers.
A pit is still visible at the exit of the village towards Tenneville, length of a didactic path:
this large circular trace marks the site of a wood stack, slowly consumed to extract the charcoal from it.
In addition, in the outside museum of the Fourneau St Michel, a workshop of clog-maker coming from Laneuville-au-Bois village is still visible.
The village of Laneuville-au-Bois is typically of the Ardennes.
The local stone buildings and the roofs with “croupettes” are still majority.
Around the church, we can admire the most beautiful residences, old school or farms;
some have even preserved the workshop of the clog-maker.
At the exit of the village, towards the east, asmall “potale” (niche)(XVIIIe century) is an old witness of popular piety.
Lastly, in this same street, three houses with the very particular contemporary architecture received each one a price at the time of contest.
Ideal starting point of many walks, the village is in the middle of a greenery box of several of thousands mixed and undulating hectares of forest.
This natural heritage is the jewel of the Belgium’s Crown but if its access is completely free the condition is to respect the environment.
