Geocache Description:

This cache is another in a series placed on or near the sights of Drive-in theaters of the past. The Pekin Drive-in was opened in 1950 under much controversy because of it's location next to the cemeteries. It closed 4 years later after being destroyed by a tornado. This cache was placed with the owners permission.

The first Drive-in theater opened June 6, 1933 in Camden New Jersey. During the 1950's there where approximately 4,000 drive-ins open in the U.S. 120 of those in Illinois, but presently only about 500 remain in business and only 12 in Illinois. Most drive-ins have been replaced by office parks, super stores and shopping centers. I hope other cachers keep the series growing across America by placing caches at similar locations in there home towns. Information about lost drive-ins can be found on the web by searching Drive-ins.com. Please include any memories you may have of visiting your favorite drive-in in your post.PAC Member
