Geocache Description:

An easy C&D that will introduce you to the Union Transportation Trail. All descriptions are furninshed by the Monmouth County Park System's website.

The Union Transportation Trail was once the Pemberton & Hightstown Railroad, a short line right of way established in 1864 to provide dairies and farms access to larger railroads at junctions in Pemberton (Burlington County) and Hightstown (Mercer County). The railroad began operations in 1868. Passenger service ceased in 1931, but freight service continued on sections of the line until 1977. The first two miles of the UTT is the county's second rail trail. Ideal for equestrians, hikers, walkers, joggers, and bicyclists, this portion of the gravel trail includes a rehabilitated historic wooden trestle bridge over Lahaway Creek which is one of the few physical remnants of the old railroad. When completed, the trail will measure 8.6 miles in length. Phase I of the UTT had its opening ceremony Sept 25, 2010. Very small trackables or coins will fit in cache, but not much else. Please make sure it closes and log remains in bag. Bring a pen! Parking lots and trail have a dawn to dusk usage.
