Geocache Description:

Wat Maha That is believed to have been made in 1374 during the reign of King Borom Rachathirat 1. The current name was given during the reign of King Ramesuan [ 1388 to 1395 ]. Wat Maha That at was a royal monastery and the spiritual center of the city. In the period 1610-1628 A.D. the main central prang collapsed, but was restored and heightened in 1633.

Wat Maha That was restored and remodeled many times in the later Ayutthaya period, until it finally collapsed in 1904. Restoration work by the Fine Arts Department in 1956 revealed many artifacts including the relics of the Buddha once housed in the stupa, other Buddha images and votive tablets, now on display in other museums.
Only the laterite base of the main chedi and some of its upper structure remains. There are traces of rows of columns that once supported the roof structure of the verandah that enclosed the chedi. Although only partially restored, the existing ruins are vast and imposing, and the visitor can gain an insight into what was once a most important religious centre.

It does cost 50 Baht to enter the complex. Ticket is only good for one area and other temples and ruin areas will charge also even of you have ticket from another area.
