Geocache Description:

A small cache located close to Thruxton Airfield. This can be done as a cache and dash or if you have the means a fly and dash.

Thruxton Airfield started out as RAF Thruxton, where back in the late 1930s it was considered to be an emergency landing strip for planes flying from local RAF Andover. Come the Second World War and Thruxton was upgraded from a simple grass strip to a Class A airfield – complete with the standard 3 crisscross concrete runways.

During the war, various squadrons and fighters flew out Thruxton including Lysanders, Huricanes, and P-51 Mustangs before the whole place was turned over to first Bomber Command and the the USAAF.

After the war, Thruxton airfield was leased to Wiltshire School of Flying and all but one of the concrete runways was allowed to fall into disrepair. It was in the 1950s that a racing began at Thruxton, as a circuit was constructed around the perimeter of the airfield; with it initially being used to host motorcycle races including the famous Thruxton 500. These days Thruxton is on the British Touring Car Circuit and the British Superbike Championship as well as still being an active airfield. Parking: It is possible to park right next to the cache. However bear in mind the roads get very busy on race weekends. And for those flying in to have a crack at this one, here is what you need to know:
