This plinth was erected in around 1880 by John Woods MP who, as the inscription reads, was a staunch advocate of the use of Victorian Stone for the building of Victoria's Parliament House. He believed this stone, from the Mount Difficult quarry (in the Grampians), was of such a quality that it would outlast the building.
Woods firmly believed Victoria should use locally quarried stone, not import stone from NSW to build our own Parliament House. He felt incensed and powerless by the 'deal' making he felt was done with the choice of NSW stone.
Born in Liverpool in 1822, John came to Australia with his wife in 1852. After a rocky start, he entered politics in 1859 and gained the position of Commissioner of Railways. He was an all round 'larrikin' and I think this plinth is a great summation of his impetuous and unconventional personality.
More information about John Woods can be found on the Australian Dictionary of Biography website. This cache is a tribute to Exhibitionist, my first DNF cache, and with luck this cache will last half as long as that one did.
The cache:
There are cameras in the area so two people, one to stand between the hide and the camera will make this cache easier to pick up. The cache itself is a 200mL clip top container.
Logging Etiquette: Geocache hiders sometimes go through a great deal of planning to place their caches. As a result, they'd like to hear your feedback on whether you liked or disliked any aspect of the hide, or if you feel that some cache maintenance is required. Single word, acronym, or emoticon logs may be easier when you have a lot of caches to log, but it doesn't tell the hider or other finders anything about your adventure (or lack thereof) in finding the cache. Please keep this in mind when entering your log.
Please sign the log book or your log will be removed.
