Geocache Description:

A little known memorial to the man who was the driving force behind creating Kielder forest. 4 miles from the nearest road, all except the last 400 yds on forest tracks.

This cache was placed in by our very good friend Northumbria Biker who looked after it until late 2021, when we were privileged to adopt it (thanks Norman) and hopefully keep it active for many more years.

First Baron Robinson of Kielder Forest and of Adelaide (1883-1952), forester was born on 8 March 1883 at Macclesfield, South Australia. He was appointed O.B.E. in 1918, knighted in 1931 and raised to the peerage in 1947. Lord Robinson is regarded as the chief architect of state forestry in Great Britain, being largely responsible for the planning and initiation of the extensive government plantation programme designed to make the country less dependent on imports of wood, particularly in time of war; for the formation of National Forests Parks for public enjoyment; and for co-operative schemes with private woodland owners. In 1953 his ashes were scattered in Kielder Forest at Whickhope and a cairn marks the spot. More information can be found at - http://woolshed1.blogspot.com/2009/03/kielder-forest-history-lord-robinson-of.html The shortest way to reach the cairn is to head up the forestry track which starts near Whickhope on the Kielder reservoir. An ideal cache to visit on bike on good tracks, though it is uphill most of the way. After about 3.5 miles, as you near the brow of a hill, watch out for a small, green metal sign on a post which points the way up a fire break to the cairn (see image). Though a short walk it is quite heavy going with tussocks, high heather and plenty of gaps and gullies for the unwary to step into. Cache is a small lock-box which will hold small swaps and TBs. Cache placed with permission of the Forestry Commission
