This car park is actually built on the old road that ran between
Hindpool and Ormsgil. As you travelled from Barrow the right hand
side of the road had a huge area of low level ground and was known
to us then as the Dingle. The Dingle was actually a clay pit dug to
supply clay to the Barrow Brick Works which was demolished in the
1970’s.
A gate post at the entrance to Asda car park can be seen on the
corner of a house, this gate post was the entrance to Barrow Brick
Works. I remember looking round it when I was a kid and got a
guided tour round the kilns and area above which provided the fuel
to the fires in the kilns below.
A railway bridge just down the path from the car park used to lead
to the entrance of Cocken Tunnel which travelled through the slag
bank to the beach on the other side. This would have provided a
right of way to the foot bridges that cross over to Walney Island.
One foot bridge still remains and can be crossed at low tide.
Getting the tides wrong could mean a long walk to cross the channel
at Walney road bridge or waiting a few hours for the water level to
drop.
