Tusteren Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

cervisvenator: Hi

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for the cache owner and block other cachers from placing a cache in the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can’t do so forever.

Nothing seems to happen with this cache listing, so it is now archived, so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if it hasn’t been done already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

Geocaches which have not been maintained or the owner has not responded will not be taken out of the archive

(This reviewer note is in English so non-Norwegian cache owners, geocachers and cache reviewers can understand what it says.)

Thanks for your understanding,
Cervis Venator

Geocache Description:

A cache by tormodel and reidarstol.

This cache lies by the road 680. This is the main road across Tustna. Tustna was a separate municipality until 1 January 2006. Since then it has been a part of Aure municipality. "Tusteren" is one of the first known written names for the island.

View from the cache area. Jørenvågssalen mountain and Trondheimsleia (The Trondheim shipping route)

The administrative centre was Gullstein, approxomately 8 kilometers north-east of the cache. Tustna (the island) lies between the islands of Golma (to the west) and Stabblandet and Solskjel (to the east). From the cache location (when not in between the trees), you can see "Trondheimsleia" which is the main shipping route along the Norwegian coast. You can also see The Coastal Express that will pass by here twice a day (northbound and southbound). In the horizon, you can see Smøla (island and municipality), which you can reach by ferry from Sandvika on Tustna.

History
Tustna was originally a part of the municipality of Edøy. A meeting held on 17 March 1863 decided to build a church on Tustern (which was the name of the island at that time) and thereby gain status as a separate parish. A royal resolution of 3 May 1873 directed that Tustern be separated from Edøy to create a separate municipality. This happened on 1 January 1874. The new municipality had an initial population of 1,179. On 1 January 1965, a small part of Tustna on the island of Ertvågsøy (population: 85) was moved to Aure. On 1 January 2006, Tustna was merged into the municipality of Aure. At the end, Tustna had a population of 1,006.

Sattelite map of Tustna island(s).

Tustna probably comes from old Norse "þústr" which means "staff" or "stick", and in that case it is probably referring to the form of one of the mountains on the island.

As the cote d'arms of old Tustna municipality shows, stockfish has been important to the island's economy and growth. Today, farming, livestock, some fish farming and tourism are the main income categories for the island's inhabitants.

The cache contains log book, pencil and fits TBs and other small items. The terrain is set fairly high, because you need to step down and lean. There is also a slight risk of tripping, but the cace hunt is not dangerous in any way.

I've added the "dangerous animals" attribute because one cacher have encountered an adder (snake) at the location.
You don't have to move any rocks.
