Geocache Description:

Moshassuck Cemetery is the only cemetery in Central Falls. On this journey, you will be navigating your way through the cemetery in order to reveal the final cache location. As always, treat the grounds with respect and keep your hunting to daylight hours. Dogs are allowed on the property, but obey the signs.

To successfully log this cache, you will need to have a comfortable knowledge in projecting waypoints. If you're not a pro at this, it's ok - you'll get plenty of practice. The calculated waypoints should be on target, but in reality you'll just need to get pretty close as further information provided will direct you to the exact location.

All distances are in feet and all directions are true bearings. If you need to convert the distance to miles, you can divide the answers by 5280.

A printout of this page will come in handy, so you probably should bring one for keeping notes.

You will also need to bring a calculator (or an abacus), as there will be a fair amount of math involved.

Oh, and bring a pen too.

This starting location is of historical significance, as this is the site of the Saylesville Massacre, which occurred in 1934 when National Guard troops, dispatched by Governor T.F. Green, opened fire on labor union workers who were on strike and rioting. To the west, you can still see the evidence of the violence of that day as there is a headstone with bullet holes in it. This marker's location can be found using the posted waypoint, although you should be able to spot it easily. Once you've arrived at the listed coordinates, your journey begins...

PROJECTION I

Distance:
AA'
A = Twice the number of people killed

C = The total number of times the letter "S" appears in these names
D = The total number of times the letter "L" appears in these names

This new location is one of the oldest parts of the cemetery and you can see the old entrance here as well. Look for the grave of Rebecca Rose. Her headstone is a bit different from the others here, as there are two dates listed for her death. Upon examining these markers this, you should understand why...

PROJECTION II

Distance:

(The first year of death that is listed) ÷ 13
Subtract 33 from this number for the final distance
Bearing:
(The number of letters in the first word after Rebecca's name) X 13

__ __ __ ' @ __ __ __ °

This monument is noticeable as this woman's profession is clearly visible on the marker. She is one of the few nurses who died overseas (in France) during WWI.

PROJECTION III

Distance:

(The number of letters in her full name) X 11
Subtract the square root of her age from this number for the final distance
Bearing:
(Subtract 2 from her age) X 7

At this new location there is a family plot, highlighted by a tall monument.

PROJECTION IV

Note your current coordinates:

N 41° 53.__ __ __ W 071° 24.__ __ __

North coordinate:
Find Amelia's name on the monument.
Add the day of her birth to the day of her death.
Subtract this 2-digit number from your current North coordinate.

West coordinate:

Subtract the year of her birth from the year of her death.
Subtract this 2-digit number from your current West coordinate.

N 41° 53.__ __ __ W 071° 24.__ __ __

This family marker isn't like the ones around it. Not only is it of a different medium, but it's not quite "right"...

PROJECTION V

Distance:

(10 X Sarah Jane's age) - (Her second son's age)
Bearing:
Add all 4 ages listed on the monument.
Multiply this number by 2 and then add the number of letters in the family's last name.

__ __ __ ' @ __ __ __ °

You'll come to another family plot marked by a tall monument with a statue.

PROJECTION VI

At this location, A = 1, B = 2, ...Z = 26. Substitute as instructed to calculate the following.

Distance:
Find the month that Annie died.
Substitute the three letters using the instructions above then subtract ten from this new number.
Bearing:
Substitute all of the letters of the last name and add these numbers together. Make a note of this number and then multiply it by 9.

As you head to the next location, you'll pass by the Civil War monument. If you look closer, you may notice that this monument was placed by the town of Lincoln. This is because at one time, this cemetery was actually located in Lincoln. Since then, the town lines were redrawn and you are now in Central Falls. Also, the gravestones here are all just memorials to the locals lost in the Civil War. There are no burials here, as it was rare for those killed in action at that time to be transported home for burial.

Once you reach the new destination, you'll find another hero who died in combat, Lt. N. Grant Logan, killed in France during WWII.

PROJECTION VII

Distance:

Find the number you made a note of during the last calculation. Subtract this from the first number after Lt. Logan's name, his fighter squadron.
Bearing:
Take the same magic number from the last calculation and multiply it by 2. Subtract this from the second number after Lt. Logan's name, his fighter group.

__ __ __ ' @ __ __ __ °

At this penultimate destination, you'll find yet another war hero, Warren C. Linfield.

K = The 2nd digit in the day of his death
L = The 3rd digit in the year of his birth
