Geocache Description:

A cache located along the Speed River Trail running from Guelph to Cambridge.

There is all kinds of evidence of critter activity along the Speed, including waterfowl, deer and beaver. Watch carefully and maybe you will be fortunate enough to observe! While out on a recent trail hike we noticed a river beaver lodge on the opposite bank, a well-used deer trail runing parallel to the hiking trail, and an unusual arrangement of sticks along the trail where it seems to go right through a beaver lodge, but there may be a better explanation. The beaver lodge is on the quarry side of the river between the trailhead and the cache. Canada goose as well as ducks, cranes, and mergansers are common. About 20m behind the cache (to the west) is a well -used deer trail. About 100m past the cache - just before a small footbridge - is where the curious pile of sticks that might be (or have been?) a beaver lodge can be found. There we also spotted a snapping turtle hiding in the shallows under some sticks. To reach the cache, park at the trailhead near the Guelph Humane Society gates. There is no access from Hwy 24. The only other access point is the trailhead on Niska Road near the baily bridge across the Speed River. There are a number of other caches along this section of the trail so enjoy a nice GeoHike! But be aware that the trail can be muddy and/or swamped depending on the season. There is a small pencil in the cache. Please do not remove it or try to stuff it in the ziplok bag with the log as it is a tight fit. Please bring your own writing instrument "just in case".
