Geocache Description:

In this area that now sits a industrial park was once the Englewood
Speedway.
Please if you have memories of this area share them when you log this find. I love hearing about areas and what used to be.

"Englewood Speedway was built by Ed Clark and Carroll Quelland in
1947. They orginally started out to buy a midget race car and ended
up buying the track instead. There were no stands, everyone sat on
the side of the hill and the pits were on the north side. The track
was dirt. Red Fitzwater was the champion the first year in a Ford
roadster owned by Charlie Codner. The following year he was a
repeat champion.

In 1950 Charlie and Marion Codner bought the track so the
Colorado Automobile Racing Club would have a place to race. Stands
were put on the south side and the track was paved. In August they
changed from roadsters to stock cars, otherwise known as
"jalopies". Don Padilla in the Codner Ford was champion for the
second year in a row. The club was known as the "Englewood Speedway
Racing Club"."

"Unfortunately, what was once a great speedway in an undeveloped
area in the ‘40’s and ‘50’s, became a
nuisance (according to the Environmental Protection Agency) in the
late ‘60’s and ‘70’s as housing and
businesses swallowed up the surrounding area around the site.
Continuous noise complaints and the mid ‘70’s energy
crunch didn’t help matters either, and soon the land that
Englewood Speedway sat on became too valuable to be used as a
racetrack just two nights a week for five months out of the year.
All of the divisions were increasingly waning and becoming more
expensive to run, as the car counts became low during the ’78
and ’79 seasons."
The racing at the speedway ended after the 1979 season.
