The Texas Spirit
Quest
is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near
cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the
many pioneer ancestors that have ‘walked’ before
us.
There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural communities
across Texas. This series will introduce you to many of them. The
cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries,
tombstones and local
lore.
This is a roadside cemetery with approximately 150 graves,
ranging from 1902 to as recent as 2009. Note the preponderance of
German names; some of the headstones, in fact, bear inscriptions in
that language. The earliest date of birth shown on any of the
markers is 1846. Interestingly, a surprisingly high number of the
individuals laid to rest here lived into their 80s or 90s, and
there is at least one centenarian.
There is also a roadside marker close at hand to commemorate the
Camino Real from Spanish days.
The gate is not locked, and the grounds are fairly well-maintained.
The cache is hidden in a tree a couple of hundred feet within the
fenceline. You can access this at night, but since someone lives
literally next door to this place, that's probably not
advisable.
