Geocache Description:

The coordinates will bring you to sign post at the edge of Brown's Brook.

This brook is located at the base of the bluff on Mackinac Island's western shoreline and is fed by Dablon Spring, one of Mackinac Islands many underground springs.

Rain and melt water penetrates the surface ground and then seep into and through loose soluble limestone rock higher up on the bluff flowing into underground channels and caverns that eventually bubbles up to the surface and flows forming the brook you see before you.

You can safely park your bicycle at the waypoint accompying this cache page. A brief walk up the nearby ramp/stairway will provide you easy access to the Earthcache location and prevent unnecessary errosion.

Please stay on the path.

Dablon spring is named after "Claude Dablon, S.J. (1619-97), who in 1670, was named Superior General of the Jesuit missions in the interior of what was then French Canada, and he supervised Allouez, Marquette, and other Jesuit missionaries in this region. A talented cartographer, Fr. Dablon, in 1672, drew the first accurate map showing the outlines of the Great Lakes." --from Frank Straus, "Jesuit Missionaries A Look at History"

In order to log this earthcache please email me the answers to the following questions:

#1. Please indicate what one thing this brook does year-round.

#2. What is the name of the soluble stone that funnels water into Brown's Brook?

#3. Estimate the speed at which the brook is flowing (this can be done by dropping a piece of grass or a stick into the water and recording the distance/time it takes to travel or give me an approximate width of the brook to the South East of the signpost.

#4. This is optional but please do include a picture of yourself with the brook behind you if you can. It would be nice to gather a collection of images detailing the brooks water flow at different times of the year as cachers continue to visit this location.

After you finish the requirements feel free to continue on and complete the loop trail.

Please stay on the trail at all times to preserve the area for those who will visit in the future.

If you see some trash on the trail please pick it up. There is a trash can back at the trail head. Remember to always leave it better than you found it.

Thank you for visiting my Earthcache!
