Geocache Description:

THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES!

This is part of our Abandoned Airport Series.

This is a very simple mystery that can be solved with just the information on the cache page! We made this a puzzle so hopefully, you would take time to learn a bit of history about the old Airfields of the area.

Cornado Airport is a set of two paved airstrips in NE Albuquerque near I-25 and San Pedro. It opened in 1961 and remained active for 40 years.

Photobucket
Runway 17/35 was 4100' long and just 45' wide. It's elevation of 5270' meant that quite a few low elevation aircraft would have trouble landing and taking off on this short landing strip. There are several counts of fully loaded planes ending up in the cemetary south of the runway.

The Airport was vibrant and active, especailly during Balloon Fiesta when may visiting planes would use the facility due to its proximity to the park, and to avoid the hassel of the Sunport.

In 2000 there were 12 hangers and 131 aircraft registered at the field. It averaged 237 aircraft operations per day.

Cornado was purchased by the Pueblo of Sandia in 1994. It survived until 2001 when it was closed for safety reasons due to its proximity to the recently finished Sandia Casino. At that point yellow "X"'s were painted on the runways indicating to aircraft above that they could not land here.

THE CACHE IS LOCATED AT:

N 35 11.AB3
W106 34.50C

AB = 1st two digits of the lenght of runway 17/35
C = Last digit of the number of aircraft operations per day during the year 2000.

Haley remembers taking a field trip out of this airport when she was in grade school. They field trip was to take a plane up, circle around Albuquerque and come in for a landing! If you have any fond memories of this place, please tell us about them in your log! Thanks!
