Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Darlingside Wood Depot and scenic overlook.

Darlingside is a rare surviving example of the wood depots which provided an essential fuelling service during the early phase of steamboat navigation on Lake Ontario and the Upper St. Lawrence River. From the lookout you get a great view of the International Bridge, The Thousand Islands Skydeck and Raft Narrows. If you look westward and look down you will see a road and tunnel that serves only the old general store which is now a private residence. Originally the 1000 Islands Parkway was to be Hwy. 401 when it was built and that is why a tunnel was constructed for the Darlingside property. After the eastbound lane was completed they abandoned the project and completed it further north, leaving us with the beautiful scenic roadway we have today. There is a bike path on the north side which would have been the westbound lane and runs between Gananoque and Long Beach,. The path was laid by Bell Canada and covers a Fibre-Optic line that runs through the area. Cache container is small but can accept small travel bugs, pins and doo dads.
