Friar's Goose Pumping Engine Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

angel of the north: Stopped by to do some long overdue maintenance today. Unfortunately it looks as though the cache has disappeared and I've decided to archive it as a lot of the area around GZ was waterlogged. Thanks to everyone who has visited the cache site.

Geocache Description:

The co-ordinates will take you to the remains of Friar's Goose Pumping Engine. Unfortunately all that is left of this now is some of the stonework of the engine house, which housed an engine built by Robert Stephenson in the early 19th Century for draining water from the coal mines below. The mine shaft has been filled in. Every pump stroke lifted about 195 galls (800 Ltrs). At one stroke every 10 seconds this removed over 1,500,000 gallons (6300 tonnes) a day.

I came across the Pumping Engine whilst cycling along Route 14 – Keelman’s Way. Further information about this and Friar’s Goose Pumping Engine can be found here. (visit link)

The cache is a small camouflaged container with only space for a log and pencil. It is not inside the engine house, which unfortunately has become filled with rubbish, but a short walk away.
